FAQs
Do you need a building permit for a deck in Toronto?
Generally in Toronto and rest of Ontario if your deck is over 2 feet in elevation and/or is over 108 sq. ft. in size, it will require a building permit. A permit is also required if structural renovations will be made to an existing deck.
What happens if you build a deck without a permit in Ontario?
Being uninformed and building a deck can result in a failed inspection by an inspector, the need to remove it, and possible fees and charges to you from the city. Bylaws about construction are dependent on your local region, these can affect the size of the deck and how close you can have it to a property line, etc.
How deep do deck footings need to be in Ontario?
4 Feet
Footings shall bear on solid ground at a minimum of 48” below grade for frost protection. Footings shall be deeper if solid ground is not found. Bearing conditions must be verified by the Building Inspector prior to placement of concrete. Concrete piers shall extend 6” above grade.
How close to a fence can you build a deck?
The proximity of your deck to a property line is limited by your zoning. In most neighborhoods, a rear deck can be as close as 4 m (13 ft.) to the back property line and . 6 m (2 ft.) from a side property line.
Can I use deck pier blocks instead of footings?
Deck pier blocks are used in deck building as an alternative foundation to traditional footings. They are placed directly on the ground, and do not require digging or pouring. They come pre-formed with holes for attaching the posts of a deck, making it easy to install.
